Designer Profile

Louise Nicholson Carter is a nationally recognized interior designer and art consultant specializing in healing environments. Louise has made her career creating healing spaces based on Evidence Based Design principles. The first phase of her career was focused on Interior Design of world class healthcare facilities including managing the Interiors department of one of the top healthcare design firms in the nation followed by starting her own Design firm. As a designer Louise recognized the healing power of art and the lack of successful art programs in patient spaces which led to the second phase of Louise’s career focusing on Art Consulting for healthcare facilities. As the owner of the leading healthcare Art Consulting firm in the nation she led the charge to bring EBD practices to the art world. At IDEA Louise has combined her two passions of Design and Art with our mission to provide Innovative Design & Aesthetics to the healing environment. Prior to becoming a full-time art consultant, she served as Interior Design Studio Leader for two large prominent Houston design firms, as well as establishing her own practice, Carter Design Associates, an award-winning healthcare interiors and architectural firm. Louise has given her time to professional and political organizations, supporting the interior design industry through board positions in IIDA and the Texas Association of Interior Designers (TAID).   She is a founding member and past officer in the American Academy of Healthcare Interior Designers (AAHID), and was one of the first persons to be EDAC certified in Evidence Based Design.  She has worked tirelessly to protect the interior design profession within the legislative and credentialing environments.  In support of her efforts she was honored by receiving the “Texas/Oklahoma IIDA Leadership Award of Excellence”, 2014, and “The John Tryon Robinson Award”, Texas Association for Interior Designers, 2013 Louise is actively involved in many community organizations and has served on local, state, and national boards, as well as organizing fundraisers for several non-profits.   When not relaxing at her week-end home in Galveston, she can be found racing vintage British sports cars with the Texas Triumph Register.  However, most importantly, she enjoys spending time with her family, grand kids, friends and IDEA family.
